Canon/OC/Canon AU/Canon OC/CRAU: OC
Canon Point:
Personality: At best, Devin can be described as aloof. Outwardly, he keeps people at arm's length and maintains distant, professional relationships with most people in his life. When circumstances demand, however, Devin will intentionally be antagonistic towards anyone who gets too close. This is both to protect them from his many enemies, and to protect himself. Functional immortality sucks, as it turns out; he's had too many people die under his watch.
Rejected by his family for being an aberration, Devin has considered other vampires to be his enemies since he was very young. Unfortunately, he's also now the eldest of his sire line, meaning he's surrounded by vampires on a daily basis, and has cultivated that company accordingly. When it comes to controlling his territory and maintaining the reputation and power he's built from the ashes of his family's legacy, Devin is cold, calculating, and willing to be utterly brutal. Attacks on those he is responsible for are seen as attacks on him, and very few people are willing to test him these days.
Because he has to hide his true intentions to annihilate vampires from his organization, Devin has carefully crafted a mask that looks like ease and charm. So much has depended on that mask that his own emotional self-awareness is rather poor. Between his lifestyle and the harms caused to him early in his life, he finds it extremely difficult to trust anyone.
Behind all of his walls and outer asshattery, Devin is still capable of being kind. Should anyone get him to open up again, either to friendship or to love, he would be fiercely loyal and protective. There is very little he wouldn't do to keep someone he cared about safe, even if it means he gets seriously injured. He'll go out of his way to protect someone mortal if it's within his power, and while he'll defend his own life he'll do his absolute best not to permanently harm them.
Appearance: PB Ian Somerhalder
History: CW: Blood, child abuse, murder (hi I'm terrible to him)
Devin was born nearly two centuries after his previous sibling and was considered something of a miracle. This perception didn't last long, however, when it was discovered that not only did Devin scar, he was also slower than he ought to be compared to other vampires, and far weaker - almost as weak as a human. Worse still, Devin began to express sympathy with humans, and asked why they had to be harmed as part of feeding on them.
After years of abuse, Devin finally had enough. Taking an enormous risk, he let himself reach a state of hunger where vampires become incredibly strong and savage. In one fell swoop, he murdered his parents and then burned the mansion to the ground, killing everyone else inside. At the age of seventeen, he became the youngest elder in history.
It took time to secure his leadership, being young and relatively unknown, but he had not spent his years moping in the attic. He had studied the politics of his father's realm, the people and the tactics and the traditions. Once the dust settled, however, he turned all of that on its head and began gathering around him a group of misfit vampires that named themselves 'The Flotsam'. Things remained relatively steady until a rival group launched an attack that killed, among many others, his closest friend and advisor of years, Marcus; he was also Devin's lover, though that was not known by the attackers. The retribution was disproportionately violent and brought that group into subordination under Devin. After that, Devin developed a reputation among vampires: he was the one you went to when you needed a problem solved.
In secret, he also created a series of boardinghouses for vampire hunters: a place to train, rest, and resupply. No one running the boardinghouses is aware that their founder is a vampire, and no vampires are aware of the support he's providing. Devin also runs a number of vampire bars around the world to maintain a visible profile; the best way to accomplish his goals is to hide in plain sight.
It was around then that the Spirit appeared and quite literally knocked him on his ass: the very first meeting with a god nearly put Devin in a coma. The Spirit explained to Devin the reason he was so different: he is one vessel for a dormant aspect of the Angel of Death, Abaddon, and as such Devin's life is of universal importance. To hammer this point home, Devin was also introduced to six other vampires much like him, each carrying their own aspect of Abaddon and each with their own unique abilities. They are, in essence, his family, but their relationships with each other are complex.
And then, about ten years ago, Devin met Bobby. Wickedly smart and relentlessly persistent, she managed to capture Devin's attention and keep it long enough to get closer than anyone had in decades. Bobby is not human, however: she's a demon. Her attraction to Devin was out of a desire to use the aspect of the angel Abaddon within him for purposes unknown - to get back into Heaven, to end the world; he's still not certain. His six 'siblings' managed to save him from her rushed attempt on his life, which left him scarred in more ways than one.
Now, things are shifting dangerously in the world of vampires, and Devin is moving up his plans to partner with hunter groups to put an end to it - and possibly to all vampires, if he can manage it.
Abilities:
Vampiric attributes - Devin is extremely fast and unnaturally strong, with heightened senses (sight, hearing, smell). His healing factor is better than a human's, but slower than most vampires, and he scars.
Vampire magic - Devin has the ability to Claim (essentially a mark of protection) and Bind mortal beings, although he refuses to use the Binding ability (this is included in his permissions regardless, and both are strictly opt-in).
The Aspect - Devin contains one of the seven faces of Abaddon, the Angel of Death. It enables him to consume vampire magic by consuming vampire blood, such as other vampires' Bonds over humans in order to release them, and increases his healing and strength dramatically. At the moment, the aspect is dormant and he has no access to any other potential powers, although the aspect may react subtly to certain stimuli.
Fists of Fury - Devin is a proficient fighter in several styles, though he'll rely on pure brute force when he has to.
Polyglot - In addition to his native tongue of English, Devin can also speak French and Italian fluently. He understands Latin reasonably well, and knows a smattering of Arabic, Spanish, and Mandarin.
Inventory: Four daggers, a loaded pistol (no extra ammo), and a silver crucifix.
Special Notes: He'll need blood but this can come from the replicators.
